India greenlighted 51 Solar Parks, totaling a capacity of 37,740 MW across 12 states by through 2023, reflecting its emergence as a major power in the green energy space
India has enormous potential for solar energy, estimated to be 748 GWp, as reported by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE). This estimation is based on data from the Waste Land Atlas of India 2010.
The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Power, R.K. Singh, provided an update on India's solar energy development to the Rajya Sabha. Since December 2014, India has given the green light to 51 solar parks, totaling a capacity of 37,740 MW across 12 states. As of December 31, 2023, 10,504 MW of solar plants have been commissioned within 20 solar parks.
The government's objective is to achieve an installed capacity of 500 GW from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, following the Prime Minister's announcement at COP-26 in Glasgow. The minister added that no state-wise targets have been set for this national objective in his response to two separate questions in the upper house of Parliament.
