Urbaser Sumeet, a Chennai-based company, invited Manjula, a sanitary worker to unfurl the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations.
This the first instance a female sanitary worker has been invited as a chief guest in the state. Alongside Manjula, another garbage collection driver named S Ambarasan, hoisted the flag at the event.
Manjula, a single mother with two children, appreciated this endeavour of the group for inviting her.
This decision taken by the group could be an eye-opener for many other such organisations, public or private. The symbolic act also assumes importance given that inclusivity and equality of workers help companies score better on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) parameters.
